Sciatica is commonly used to describe symptoms that travel along the path of the sciatic nerve. The experience can differ from person to person, which is why the location, behaviour and history of the symptoms all matter.
What people may notice
Symptoms may include pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg, as well as tingling, numbness or weakness. Some people mainly notice leg symptoms, while others also experience lower-back discomfort.
The pattern alone does not provide a complete diagnosis. A proper assessment helps identify whether the presentation may involve nerve irritation and whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
Why assessment comes first
Your history, movement, spinal function and neurological findings can all contribute useful information. Further investigation or referral may be recommended when clinically appropriate.
Seek urgent medical care for sudden or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or symptoms following significant trauma.
